Current Research Activities in Izuta Laboratory
Effects of Ozone on Japanese Crops and Trees
Ozone (O3), a component of photochemical oxidants, is considered to be one of the important factors
relating to the reduction in growth and yield of crops and tree dieback or forest decline observed in Japan
because relatively high concentrations of O3 above 100 ppb are detected in Japan.
We are investigating the effects of O3 on growth, physiological functions and quality of Japanese crops
using the new ozone-exposure chambers (left photograph) at Field Musium Tama Hill of Tokyo University
of Agriculture and Technology
.
At the present time, limited information is available for the effects of O3 on Japanese forest tree species.
Using the open-top chambers (right photograph) at Akagi Testing Center, Central Institute of Electric Power Industry,
we are experimentally investigating the effects of O3 on growth, gas exchange rates, chlorophyll contents,
enzymes such as Rubisco, nutrient status and structure of Japanese forest tree species such as Fagus crenata seedlings.
Also, we are investigating the effects of O3 and nitrogen load or elevated CO2, singly and in combination,
on growth, gas exchange rates, chlorophyll contents, concentration and activity of enzymes such as Rubisco
and nutrient status of Japanese forest tree species.
Effects of Aerosol on Japanese Forest Tree Species
Recently, transboundary air pollution is one of the serious environmental problems in East Asia.
Aerosol is one of transbundary air pollutants in Asia.
There is a possibility that aerosol such as black carbon and ammonium sulfate particles
will induce adverse effects on plants such as crops and trees.
In our laboratory, we are investigating the effects of black carbon and ammonium sulfate particles
on phenological characteristics, growth, leaf gas exchange rates, chlorophyll contents, enzymes
such as Rubisco and nutrient status of Japanese forest tree species.
Effects of Acid Deposition on Japanese Forest Tree Species
Atmospheric deposition of nitrogen is increasing year by year, and may induce nitrogen saturation and
excessive soil nitrogen in Japanese forest ecosystems. There is a possibility that excessive nitrogen will
induce several detrimental effects on Japanese and Asian forest tree species and cause tree dieback
and/or forest decline in the near future. Therefore, we must investigate the effects of acid deposition
on many Japanese and Asian forest tree species. In our laboratory, we are investigating the effects of
excessive nitrogen and soil acidification on phenological characteristics, growth, leaf gas exchange rates,
chlorophyll contents, enzymes such as Rubisco and nutrient status of Japanese forest tree species.
